Masters Superfish in Bermondsey has been feeding locals proper fish and chips for years, and the rustic, no-frills dining room fills up most evenings with a mix of regulars and visitors trying to work out what the complimentary pickled gherkins and onions are all about. The star here is the fish itself — cod and haddock come generously portioned with a thin, crispy batter and a liberal shake of salt and vinegar. Thick-cut chips arrive piping hot, and sides like mushy peas and coleslaw are available. Kids eat well here with a fairly priced menu, highchairs on hand, and space for buggies in the dining room. "I had the haddock and it was fabulous," one regular says, while another praises staff member Ivy for offering excellent service. Expect big portions, bottles of London Pride, and huge dishes of ketchup and tartare sauce at the table. Best for a straightforward Friday night chippy run when you want the real thing, not the fancy version.
